Hi, I’m Mick Goryan, sprintcar driver for MGR based in Alice Springs. The first season proved to be an eventful one, with our debut race blitzing the field, winning the race all pumped up to find out we had just blown up our brand new engine! We proceeded to repair the engine, learn from our mistakes and with a lot of enthusiasm and car preparation race with good form in local meets. In the lead up to our first Alice Springs title MGR were quietly confident, and after some close racing we placed second with only the winner and myself on the lead lap. This was an awesome way for our team to end its season.

Looking forward to the start of the new season when an opportunity came our way, a 700hp American built engine available for lease right in time for the Tri City Sprintcar Spectacular. Rounds of racing were held in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs. Darwin results were not so good with a decent crash in practice leaving both me and the car a little battered. Time permitting and with the extent of the damage we headed for home a little shaken but not stirred! Friday night in Alice was different, happy with the car set up we set some quick times and eventually qualified 6th in a quality and majority interstate field. Saturday night was even better, with a small set up change everything felt perfect. A heat win, a second, a two lap Pole Shuffle record and in the final a charge from 2nd last (due to a small incident at the start) to 4th place in a field of 16. An excellent result and I was especially happy for the team as we showed glimpses of unrivalled speed acknowledging the fact that with more experience we could make podiums.
As a team, our equipment, experience and results are certainly getting better.

Sprintcar racing is an exciting and adrenalin pumping sport which is becoming nationally more recognised by the media and getting the coverage it deserves. On the local scene sprintcars are always a draw card with up to 2000 people attending a quality sprintcar meet and even more for an invitational meeting.
